Tom Ellis, best known for his charismatic portrayal of Lucifer Morningstar, recently shared that he auditioned for the role of Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic in Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four: First Steps.
The Audition Experience
In an interview with Square Mile, Ellis explained that he was among a select group of actors invited to tape for the role. “I remember looking at the photo of Richards in the comics and going, ‘This could be the one,’” Ellis recalled, highlighting his enthusiasm and connection to the character.
Despite his strong interest and physical resemblance to Reed Richards, the part ultimately went to Pedro Pascal. Ellis responded graciously, stating, “I mean to be fair, he’s not in much. He’s great though.” Reflecting on the experience, he said, “We live for the what if-ness of it,” emphasizing the excitement and unpredictability inherent in acting.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps was released on July 25, 2025, and is now available on Digital, 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD. A Disney+ release date is expected to be announced soon (ComicBookMovie).
Looking Ahead
While Ellis didn’t land the role, his audition underscores his ongoing presence in high-profile projects and the enthusiasm actors bring to iconic comic book characters. Fans of Ellis and Marvel alike can’t help but imagine the “what if” scenario of him as the stretchy superhero.
