Glen Powell’s Return to College: A Hollywood Star’s Academic Mission

Glen Powell, the charismatic actor known for his roles in Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone but You, and Twisters, is on a determined path to finish his college degree — even while juggling a high-profile acting career.

Early Years at UT Austin

Powell grew up in Austin, Texas, and after high school, he enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin, joining the Moody College of Communication.  At that time, he was working toward a Bachelor of Science in Radio-Television-Film, while also taking courses in Spanish and Early American History.  However, just a year into his studies, he dropped out to pursue acting full-time.

Decision to Return Home

After years in the spotlight, Powell decided to move back to Austin and resume his education.  His decision was influenced in part by fellow Texan Matthew McConaughey, who encouraged him to “unplug” from Hollywood and reconnect with his roots. Powell has described finishing his degree as not just a personal goal, but something emotionally meaningful — especially for his family.

Finishing the Degree — While Filming

One of the most remarkable aspects of his return is how he’s balancing studies with his acting career. While filming The Running Man in London, Powell is taking his remaining classes via Zoom and flying back to Austin two to three times each semester for proctored exams.  According to his own account, he only needs two more courses — Spanish and Early American History — to complete his degree. Director Edgar Wright, who is helming The Running Man, has been very supportive of this flexible arrangement.

Graduation Timeline

Powell has shared that he plans to graduate in Spring 2027, taking about six credits per semester to slowly but steadily finish his degree. He has emphasized that this will be a real, earned degree — not an honorary title — and that his return to school is a genuine commitment.

Why It Matters

For Powell, this isn’t just a box to check. He’s spoken openly about how important it is to him on an emotional level — for his mother, for his sense of self, and as proof that education can be meaningful at any stage of life. His story resonates not just as a celebrity making a comeback, but as someone modeling perseverance, responsibility, and authenticity.
