Jonathan Bennett Says He Wants Aaron Samuels to Remain Straight in a Potential Mean Girls Sequel

Actor Jonathan Bennett—known for his role as Aaron Samuels in the 2004 cult favourite Mean Girls—recently shared his views on how his character should be portrayed in any possible sequel. Despite being openly gay himself, Bennett insists that Aaron’s character remains straight if a follow-up film ever materialises.

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bennett explained:

“I think Aaron would be straight because I wouldn’t want to change the narrative of Aaron Samuels because Jonathan Bennett is gay.” EW.com

He pointed out that several of his male co-stars—such as Daniel Franzese (Damian) and Rajiv Surendra (Kevin Gnapoor)—have publicly come out since the original film’s release, making the topic especially relevant today. EW.com+1

A Sequel Idea in the Air

While no official sequel has yet been confirmed, Bennett said “99 percent of the cast” would be interested in returning if Tina Fey (the original film’s creator) green-lights the project. He pitched a storyline where Aaron becomes a teacher at North Shore High, and the former Plastics (and Cady Heron) appear as parents to a new generation of students. EW.com

Why His Stance Matters

Bennett’s view stirs discussion about how legacy characters are treated when actor identities evolve. He emphasizes preserving the character’s original journey—Aaron Samuels was the straight love interest of Cady Heron in Mean Girls. Changing his orientation, in Bennett’s view, would alter nothing less than the foundational storyline of the film.

At the same time, Bennett has embraced his LGBTQ+ identity publicly, leading major inclusive projects such as Hallmark’s first gay-led Christmas movie. Them His stance here highlights the complexity facing actors whose real-life identities may shift independently of the characters they played.

What We Still Don’t Know

Whether an authorised sequel will move forward, let alone include Aaron Samuels.

If the narrative would significantly change or stay faithful to the original film’s romantic arcs.

How fans and critics would respond to changes in character orientation in a franchise deeply rooted in its early-2000s cultural moment.
