Rebecca Gayheart Opens Up About Supporting Eric Dane Through ALS Diagnosis

Rebecca Gayheart is speaking candidly about her ongoing support for her estranged husband, Eric Dane, as he navigates his battle with ALS. Despite their separation and a previous divorce filing, Gayheart emphasizes the importance of family, co-parenting, and showing up during difficult times.

“Super Complicated” but Family First

During a heartfelt interview on the Broad Ideas podcast, Gayheart described her relationship with Dane as “super complicated” but underscored that he remains an integral part of their family. She said:

“He is our family. He is your father.”

She noted that her priority is their daughters, Billie (15) and Georgia (13), and ensuring they have the opportunity to spend meaningful time with their father, even amid his health challenges.

Teaching Her Daughters About Compassion

Gayheart shared that she is using the experience to teach her daughters the importance of empathy and presence. She explained:

“I want them to know how to show up for people no matter what … they don’t ever look back and go, ‘I wish I would have spent some time with my dad.’”

The actress highlighted the emotional complexity of the situation but emphasized that staying present is a priority, regardless of personal uncertainty.

Optimism Amid Hardship

Despite the difficulty of watching a loved one battle a serious illness, Gayheart is committed to maintaining optimism. She said:

“I try to stay optimistic … I’m trying to learn from it and role-model … how to go through something like this.”

Acknowledging her own doubts, she added, “I’m just showing up … I guess time will tell.”

Reconciliation and Co-Parenting

Gayheart and Dane’s relationship has evolved over the years. The two filed for divorce in 2018, but in March 2025, Gayheart requested to dismiss the divorce, highlighting their changing family dynamics. They have since become “very good friends” and described themselves as “great co-parents.” Dane has praised Gayheart as “probably my biggest champion … I lean on her,” illustrating the mutual respect and support that has developed between them.

Supporting a Loved One Through ALS

Gayheart’s openness sheds light on the challenges families face when supporting someone with a serious illness. She stressed:

“He’s our family … we try to get through it … the best we can.”

Her perspective underscores the importance of compassion, resilience, and prioritizing family bonds, even in complicated circumstances.
