Disney Releases First Trailer for Live-Action Moana Starring Catherine Laga‘aia and Dwayne Johnson

Disney has officially unveiled the first teaser trailer for its highly anticipated live-action remake of Moana, giving fans a fresh look at the reimagined oceanic adventure. The trailer introduces newcomer Catherine Laga‘aia as Moana and features the return of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the demigod Maui — a role he reprises from the 2016 animated classic.

A First Look at Motunui Reimagined

The trailer opens with sweeping, photorealistic views of Motunui, Moana’s island home. The visuals showcase lush landscapes, glistening turquoise waters, and a more grounded, naturalistic interpretation of the Polynesian setting. Viewers see Moana gazing toward the ocean, hinting at her destiny to voyage beyond the reef.

The teaser also briefly introduces Moana’s family, including Chief Tui, Sina, and the beloved Gramma Tala — portrayed respectively by John Tui, Frankie Adams, and Rena Owen.

Catherine Laga‘aia Steps Into a Beloved Role

One standout moment features Laga‘aia softly singing a line from the powerful anthem “I Am Moana (Song of the Ancestors).” Fans have responded positively to her vocal tone and presence, praising the casting choice and her resemblance to the animated heroine.

Laga‘aia, a young Samoan/Australian actress, makes her major film debut in the role.

Maui Returns in Epic Fashion

Dwayne Johnson’s return as Maui brings familiarity to the adaptation. The teaser briefly shows Maui wielding his magical fishhook and shapeshifting — transforming into a beetle, shark, and hawk in rapid flashes. His design keeps the character’s iconic tattoos and playful expression but grounds his look in a more realistic interpretation.

Johnson, who also serves as a producer, has spoken openly about how meaningful the role is to his real-life Polynesian heritage.

Adventure, Myth, and Magic

The teaser hints at Moana’s journey across the ocean, encounters with the ocean spirit, and a glimpse of the chaotic Kakamora attacking her canoe. While the trailer is light on plot details, it leans heavily into nostalgic moments from the original film, giving fans a sense of what to expect from the remake.

Director Thomas Kail (best known for Hamilton) brings a grounded theatrical vision to the project, while Lin-Manuel Miranda and a team of original creatives return as producers.

Release and Early Fan Reactions

Moana is set to release in theaters on July 10, 2026, and the first trailer has already sparked plenty of conversation online.

Some fans praise the stunning cinematography and culturally rooted casting, while others criticize the heavy use of CGI, arguing that the trailer doesn’t feel truly “live-action.” Many also question the decision to remake a film less than 10 years old, especially following the animated sequel’s recent success.

Still, excitement remains high as Disney continues its trend of remaking animated classics with updated visuals and fresh interpretations.
